Disneyland Resort Turns 62!

Disneyland Park (now Disneyland Resort) officially opened on this date in 1955! In all honesty, the place wasn’t 100% ready. Asphalt was still sticky, trees were still being planted, and scenes were still being painted right up to the grand opening. Walt Disney was not going to miss his deadline! He had long dreamed of a place where parents and children could have fun together. His thoughts of a “Mickey Mouse park” grew and blossomed into the Happiest Place on Earth, and as per his wishes, the Resort–and its subsequent magical lands around the world–are ever expanding and improving. Today as Disneyland celebrates its 62nd anniversary, it also makes way for bigger and greater adventure to come!
Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, announced 4 new adventures that are coming soon to the Happiest Place on Earth.

D23 is going on in and near Disneyland Resort right now. This week, Bob Chapek, Chairman of Disney Parks and Resorts, took the stage to announce a lot–and I do mean A LOT–of projects coming to both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort, as well as to Disney Cruise Line. Here are 4 exciting new adventures that will launch Disneyland into the next decade of pixie dusted magic!
- We’re already aware that both Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort are in the process of adding a STAR WARS-themed “land.” Construction is ongoing, but we now know what to officially call this other-worldly place: Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Here’s what Bob Chapek disclosed at D23: The 14-acre land will open with two anchor attractions – one that gives guests the chance to pilot the Millennium Falcon on a customized secret mission, and another that puts guests right in the middle of a battle between the First Order and the Resistance. Guests will also encounter various characters, including BB8, Chewbacca, Rex and Kylo Ren. Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge will open first at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, followed by Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando, Florida, in 2019.
- A limited-time celebration, Pixar Fest, which will include fireworks, special characters, and new entertainment experiences, will launch at Disneyland Resort in 2018. Pixar Play Parade will return to the resort, this time running at Disneyland Park, and fan-favorite, Paint the Night, will move to Disney California Adventure Park, which has one of Disney’s longest parade routes.
- Paradise Pier will become Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure Park next summer, spotlighting characters and stories from THE INCREDIBLES, INSIDE OUT, and TOY STORY, in this waterfront area adjacent to the “World of Color” lagoon.
- Disney California Adventure is becoming even more Marvelous! Following the successful launch of Guardians of the Galaxy—Mission: BREAKOUT!, a completely immersive Super Hero universe, featuring Spiderman and the Avengers, is coming soon to the Park.

TODAY’S TAKEAWAY:
The stories of STAR WARS take place “long ago in a galaxy far away,” but their sword-fighting skills are not unique to the world of Wookiees and Siths. Visit The Association for Renaissance Martial Arts to learn about the ancient art of fencing, its stances, terminology and weaponry. Then, supervise your students as they dual with their own toy light sabers. If they do not have one, they can follow this simple tutorial on how to make a toy light saber using foam pool noodles, PVC pipe, and duct tape.
