In about 1 week, a brand new CD will be released that Disney fans around the globe will absolutely love!
The CD is the debut work of DJ Joe Pardo, aka DJRom, and is a musical retelling of Disney-Pixar‘s endearing tale, UP. Some of the music featured includes sound bites from the UP soundtrack, as well as bits and pieces of other works, all moshed together — remixed — into a fresh, new sound.
Curious? Listen to this teaser:
Joe will be appearing on the DISDads podcast with Aaron Rittmaster THIS Wednesday, and the channel will feature a 24-hour feed of the entire album from 8:00AM Sunday to 8:00AM Monday for its official release later that day! We will also be auctioning off several 8×10 canvas-wrap prints of the album cover + one special Adventurtorium piece, all from artist Matt Lewis, with ALL PROCEEDS GOING TO GIVE KIDS THE WORLD via the DISDads FirstGiving fundraiser page. Details on that to come soon! Use the hashtag #Adventurtorium24 on your social media channels to keep up with the conversation.
I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Joe about Adventurtorium. Get to know him better, see what inspired his latest creation, and find out why he’s donating 25% of the album’s proceeds to Give Kids the World.
Magical Mouse Schoolhouse (MMS): Hi, Joe! Tell me a bit about yourself. Who is Joe Pardo? What is your musical background?
Joe Pardo (Joe): I’ve been interested in music since I was a kid. My parents were really into music, like Springstein, rock-n-roll, etc. The DJ thing started at 7 or 8-years-old, when I started liking remixes – music that’s presented differently than it was intended to be heard. During my high school senior year, I took time to meet people who could foster me along that path. I DJ’d a few years. When I first touched vinyl records, around 2005, and was able to turn the record player off and spin records and still hear music coming out, I was sold! My friend and idol, DJP, invited me to visit him at his academy in St. Louis, and that completely changed my style and how and why I DJ.
MMS: On your website, you said Adventurtorium will be your first CD. Congratulations! Tell us a bit about the project.
Joe: It’s ALL about the story. Disney is known for its story-telling. When I was asked by Michelle Stribner McLain of the Mickey Miles podcast to put together a Disney World music mix, I knew it HAD to be story-oriented. I had a ton of ideas for it at the time. I had tons of ideas for it that grew the project too big for one podcast segment. Then, it transpired into something bigger, and Adventurtorium became a bigger and separate project. The album I’ll be releasing on 4/14/14 is, as you mentioned above, a musical retelling of the story of UP. When I DJ, I want to communicate an original piece in a new and different way, and that’s what I have done here with UP.
MMS: Why did you choose UP for the album’s inspiration?
Joe: When it was first suggested, I was going to make 1 remix for a podcast, but I brainstormed over a 3-month period, intending to include TV shows, Frozen, Toy Story (1,2,3), Finding Nemo…and it grew into something much larger. So I narrowed it down to UP, because UP is such a well-told story, and because it is such an adventure. Then, after another 3 months of working on it — 6 months altogether — it’s finally ready! It was supposed to be released before the Walt Disney World runDisney Princess ½ Marathon weekend, but I was still in the process of pour all my energy into it, and I didn’t want to let it go until it was just right.
MMS: Why did you choose this particular style of music?
Joe: None of the material is original to me. It is Live Alternative. It’s a compilation of other sounds, put together in a new way – “PLUSSED,” as Disney would call it.
MMS: Where did the title “Adventurtorium” come from?
Joe: The word just popped into my head! I thought it fit well with the adventures in UP. I liked it so I did a search on Google, and only one other item came up, so I knew it would be easy to find.
MMS: Did I read correctly that 25% of album proceeds will benefit Give Kids the World?
Joe: Yes! For every $10 in CD sales, $2.50 will be given to Give Kids the World.
MMS: Why did you choose to donate to this particular charity? (For those unfamiliar, the Orlando-based Give Kids the World is a non-profit organization that houses children with life-threatening illnesses while they are treated to weeklong, cost-free, fantasy vacations.)
Joe: That’s what Mickey Mouse does! 🙂 And runDisney also supports this great organization.
MMS: You told me in an email that the Disney community has been an amazing thing in your life, that you can’t even begin to explain. Would you like to expand on that? (Btw, it’s been an integral part of my family’s life/healing/growth as well!)
Joe: I had heard the WDW Today podcast, but wasn’t too interested when it first came out. After a few years I started listening every day. I attended one of their reunions & other events, and that has enabled me to connect with so many people who share the same passion for things like this. You don’t have to feel weird or alienated for going to Disney “again.” Disney used to be where I disconnected from life. It was all about buses and dining plans, etc., and I was worried that buying an annual pass would ruin the magic. Instead it made Walt Disney World special in a different way. I get excited because of the people now, the friendships and all that comes along with that, as opposed to the rides or attractions (although I still love those too). Disney has done a lot for meas far as looking at life differently. I don’t see it as vacation–a getaway–but as a place to go to.
MMS: Is there anything else you’d like to share about the project?
Joe: Release date has been announced for Monday, April 14, 2014, or 4/14/14. The banner is awesome! It features characters from the movie interspersed around the word “Adventurtorium.” DJ Jerry Skids has done a YouTube trailer for it, and we plan to send it to the Ellen Show! I think she’ll love it, I think the music community in general will love it, and I hope the Disney community loves it too! I am dedicating Adventurtorium to my late grandparents, Nan and Pop. They always told me that I could be anything I wanted to be as long as I did it to the best of my ability. I miss them everyday.
Joe, thank you so much for spending time with Magical Mouse Schoolhouse and our readers! It has truly been a pleasure talking to you and getting to know you. I’m really excited to see your success with Adventurtorium and can’t wait for its release. I hope you will join us again sometime.
Adventurtorium will be sold directly through Joe. No preorders. Visit the teaser page and sign up to be notified by email when the album is released. Enjoy this fun trailer (below) and be sure to tune in to the DISDads podcast this Wednesday!
