Nearly 20 species of exotic birds soar at Disney’s Animal Kingdom: Flights of Wonder!
Long ago, a Maharajah ruled the land near Anandapur. All that remains now are ancient ruins of the former sultan’s palace. The Maharajah Jungle Trek takes Guests on a walking tour through the grandeur of the ancient regal grounds, where nature has grown into and through this long-abandoned site. Around the corner under a canvas canopy is a shady sanctuary and refuge to a dazzling array of exotic birds.
Guests can sit in the shade, relax a bit, and enjoy the lively Flights of Wonder show at the Caravan Stage. Here, show host Guano Joe (or Jane), an amusing explorer who fears birds, introduces about 20 species of exotic birds. Some show off their fanciful plumage, while others impress with wit. The sheer beauty and power of others are sure to awe all in the audience.
Some species the show includes are the following:
Blue and Gold Macaws
African Grey Parrot
Great Horned Owl
East African Crowned Crane
Flights of Wonder is a great place to learn while you play, as you will learn not only about unique aspects of each animal but also the perils each species faces in the wild, and you will learn why some of these very special birds are disappearing from the planet. You will also discover how conservation efforts over the years have brought the majestic Bald Eagle–the very symbol of our nation–back from the endangered list.
Visit the Florida chapter of the National Audubon Society’s website. Click the drop-down menu and read all about Florida’s imperiled birds. Be sure to scroll all the way down to see how you can help right now. There are lots of ways to volunteer, and you can also be mentored in research initiatives. The Get Involved tab has a very cool option to participate in the Citizen Science program and become part of the EagleWatch volunteer program. Florida has over 1,400 nesting pairs in the state and has one of the highest eagle populations outside of Alaska, so there’s plenty of room on this special volunteer team!
