The GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY character, Groot, originated in Marvel Comics. According to his backstory (via Wikipedia), he is
Flora colossus from Planet X, the capital of the branch worlds. The Flora colossi are tree-like beings whose language is almost impossible to understand due to the stiffness of their larynges, causing their speech to sound like they are repeating the phrase, “I am Groot.” Other beings try to be friendly but become angry with the Flora colossi for not being able to speak.
At the end of the first GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY movie, Groot is all but destroyed, and is regrown by Rocket Raccoon from a salvaged sapling. We meet the scene-stealing Baby Groot, voiced by action star Vin Diesel, in the blockbuster sequel, GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2. Surprisingly, Vin Diesel’s voice is only slightly altered for the various inflections of, “I am Groot,” which he states 13 times in this film (12 in the first episode). As Groot only communicates with this phrase, director James Gunn created a “Groot version” of the script for himself and Vin Diesel, which contains each of Groot’s lines in what would be fully-spoken English.
