I don’t know what it is about them, but new school supplies always excite my kids—until they have to actually crack open their books. Well, we received a box of goodies from MEGA Brands that I suspect will make that excitement last.
This year marks the second year that MEGA Brands America (makers of MEGA Blocks) has published stationery and educational products under the LeapFrog brand. Now kids can benefit from the appealing instruction of LeapFrog materials in a much broader variety of ways.
The box we received contained five items appropriate for early elementary students. The first item is my kids’ favorite! It’s a combination white board/chalkboard with a detachable marker/chalk carrying case (actually appropriate for any age 3+). This item has by far received the most use, and it will accompany us in the car on our upcoming road trip to Walt Disney World. The kids can draw on it, pass notes back and forth, play tic-tac-toe or other games, or use it for writing or math facts practice. And I really love that the carrying case snaps right on, so the markers and chalk do not get lost.
Item #2 is the Draw & Write Journal for grades K-1. While my youngest is beginning 2nd grade this year, he can always use writing practice, and this journal will come in very handy. It comes with story prompts and sticker pages. The student draws a picture of the story he or she wants to tell and then writes about it on the facing page.
Item #3 is another thing both of my younger kids could use practice with: Telling Time for grades 2-3. This innovative, spiral-bound book has an adjustable clock face on the top for learning minute and hour placement. The 14 interior pages are designed for use with the accompanying dry erase marker (which we can store in the pouch with the white board).
Item #4 is another dry erase book. This one is Cursive writing, also for grades 2-3. The 16 reusable pages cover each letter of the alphabet in upper and lower case, as well as color and shape words, ordinal numbers, days of the week, and blank space for practice.
The final item in our package was a set of Multiplication Flash Cards for grades 2-4. I have to say this was the kids’ least favorite, because it looks like school, and our summer break’s not quite over yet. However, I really like them, because they are visually appealing and come with parent/teacher tips, a 12’s multiplication table card, times tables cards for 0-12, and individual problem flash cards. My daughter is entering 4th grade this year, and these will be a great help for her.
What’s great about the LeapFrog products is that they appeal to kids in a fun way, whereas kids balk at typical school books (mine do anyway, lol!). The LeapFrog Learning Products are a great way to learn while you play!
LeapFrog products by MEGA Brands are available for purchase (MSRP $0.99 – $24.99 for children ages 3 and up) at major retailers including Toys R Us, Michaels, Joann’s, Target, Walmart, Officemax, and Costco. At Target and Walmart, look for them near the stationery and writing instruments, rather than toys or school supplies.
