Disney’s Hollywood Studios turned a new leaf in 2008 with a name change and new attraction that would keep Guests coming back in droves. Toy Story Midway Mania solidified the Disney-Pixar merger and truly brought to life Andy’s beloved toys. Here, in the land “where toys come to work and play,” park visitors get a glimpse of Pixar Studios via the entrance gateway and building bricks, and they also get to become part of the show.
As soon as they pass under the gateway, Guests virtually shrink to the size of a toy. Look around! Atop a building, green army men hoist a Scrabble game with a Tinker Toy rig. Near the ride entrance and throughout the queue are alphabet blocks, crayons—new and used, kite string, cards, and Andy’s hand-drawn masterpieces. Along the way, Mr. Potato Head interacts with those in line, making eye contact with and speaking directly to passers-by.
Once players board the ride vehicles, they enter the carnival midway Andy’s toys have set up under his bed and join them in target-shooting games. Gamers don 3-D glasses for a 4-D experience, where they note not only height, width, and depth, but also sensory perceptions. They see their animated darts fire from their spring-loaded shooters, hear struck objects breaking, and feel mists and breezes when key targets are destroyed, as they challenge ride mates for top score.
A lot of traditional schools around the nation have a field day near the end of the school year. Why not follow their example, but plus it a bit? Create some cool midway games and invite your friends over for carnival day. Organize a larger event, if you have space, by getting together with other homeschoolers at your co-op or support group, OR just have family game night with your moms and dads, sisters and brothers.
You will need tables and/or desks, poster board, tape, paint or markers, small prizes, and some other miscellaneous materials.
