The tale unfolded at Maharajah Jungle Trek is one of hope for our planet, that although Man is occasionally a poor steward over creation, nature is resilient. That’s a very good lesson to remember when we journey down the Chakranadi River at Animal Kingdom’s Kali River Rapids.
Kali River Rapids is an adventurous jaunt aboard circular, 12-passenger rafts through raging rapids, past gushing geysers, and over daring waterfalls. Along the Chakranadi River (Sanscrit for “river that flows in a circle”). Kids of all ages—at least ones that meet the height requirement—get a thrill in ascending a 90-foot climb before plunging down twisting turns and choppy waters, where periodic wafts of water crash over the sides of the raft and drench passengers from head to toe.
Kali River Rapids is a refreshing way to cool off on a hot Florida day, but it, as with every other Disney Park attraction, is more than mere entertainment. Along the journey we see lush vegetation and untamed wilds—until we reach the midway point. Suddenly a scent of smoke drifts over, the sound of distant chainsaws touches our ears, and the bend reveals a burned out logging encampment. Evidence of illegal logging activity litters the riverbanks. The scene demonstrates the devastation that occurs to nature and wildlife when Man does not take proper care of his surroundings.
As Kali returns its passengers to the safety of the dock, we take an important message with us. Although nature does often rebound, as the Maharajah Jungle Trek reminded us, regrowth of destroyed habitats can take tens to hundreds of years. It’s quite a startling lesson about properly caring for our planet.
Sanskrit is one of the world’s oldest languages. According to UKIndia.com, it is derived from the same “proto mother language” as Latin and Greek, so we find many similar terms and phrases across these tongues. Today, study the Sanskrit alphabet. Practice writing your name in the ancient symbols.
