Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights
When I think of Disney at Christmas, the Osborne Family Spectacle of Dancing Lights immediately comes to mind. It takes a crew of 25 technicians 15 weeks to install the millions of colorful lights and animated displays that make the holidays bright at Disney’s Hollywood Studios.

I have to confess. I’m kinda glad a 1993 Arkansas Supreme Court ruled this display excessive for a private neighborhood decoration. If it were still confined to suburban Little Rock, Arkansas, millions of people would miss an incredible sight. Walt Disney World Resort is the perfect home for such a “Holiday Wonderland.”

Arkansas businessman and philanthropist Jennings Osborne began the tradition more than 20 years ago as a gift to his daughter. The exhibit then featured 1,000 lights and grew to include “a giant rotating globe with ‘Peace on Earth’ above it and a massive canopy of red lights that people could walk under.” Mr. Osborne said he wanted people to feel like they were inside the lights, looking out. His sentiment echoes the desire of Disney Imagineers: to immerse Guests into the movies, the stunts, the shows—to give visitors the feeling of being part of the exhibit. The Osborne Lights and their animated displays, flying angels and twirling carousels do just that, and that’s precisely why they are the perfect fit for a Disney Park.

Today’s Takeaway:
Recently, the red lights of the Osborne canopy were replaced with color-changing LED bulbs, which last much longer, illuminate brighter and burn far less energy than traditional incandescent or fluorescent lights.

Today, utilize LED technology to make your own motion powered generator (similar to a shake-and-light flashlight as seen on TV). You will need adult supervision and a few other things:
• power
• generator
• electricity
• magnet
• coil
• charge

SCHOOL SUBJECT: Science
SKILL LEVEL: This project is rated at the 5th grade level. However, I would consider it middle grades to high school difficulty.
