Tom Sawyer Island
Monday, September 19, 2011
Kids can relive the adventures of Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn at Magic Kingdom’s Tom Sawyer Island. Located in the middle of Rivers of America, this lush playground brings to life the deepwoods mischief Mark Twain’s characters got into along the banks of the mighty Mississippi River.
Guests access the island by rafts that periodically launch from Tom’s Landing near the entrance to Big Thunder Mountain Railroad. Once ashore, scramble up the hill and explore the old windmill or hide from “injuns” in cool, dark caves. Man the guns at Fort Langhorn, but be ready to escape down the tunnel and across the “barrelly” bridge if the enemy gets too close!
Tom Sawyer Island is a great place to let kids release some energy. By they way, paintbrushes are hidden in the scrub on the island. Any child who finds one and returns it to a Cast Member receives a special prize. They’re usually found pretty quickly, though, so your best chance is to go first thing in the morning.
Today’s Takeaway:
Educators at the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum in Hanibal, Missouri, have developed lesson plans, classroom resources and creative activities to help children gain a full understanding of Mark Twain’s writings, the characters he brought to life and the storied settings that have become so familiar in his works.
Visit the Mark Twain Boyhood Home and Museum website to access the following PDF files:
• a creative writing unit
• reading and activity suggestions
• reading comprehension activities
• a virtual tour of Cardiff Hill, Becky Thatcher’s house and Jackson’s Island
• and much, much more!
