When the Sun Goes Down at WDW

Friday, August 5, 2011

Welcome to the first stop aboard Magical Blogorail Yellow. Enjoy the ride as we explore the Disney Parks after dark and see what else lights up the nighttime fun besides the fireworks.

Welcome to the Magical Blogorail Yellow loop! We’re headed out to the Disney Parks after dark, where adventure lurks in the magical shadows.

One of the best places at Walt Disney World to experience this perspective is at Disney’s Hollywood Studios’ Twilight Zone Tower of Terror. As if this attraction isn’t creepy enough in the daylight, dare to enter these not-so-hallowed halls when the sun goes down, and you’ll find out just why so many ear-bursting shrieks echo down Sunset Boulevard.

According to legend, the once glamorous Hollywood Hotel hosted stars of the silver screen during Hollywood’s Golden Age. But then, on Halloween night, 1939, a violent storm struck the building, whisking 5 unfortunate souls “beyond the fifth dimension.” The hotel was left untouched after that disastrous eve.

Guests who brave this ride meander through the cobwebbed lobby and into the eerie basement boiler room to board the “fright elevator,” which goes up, then down, then maybe up again…or down. Random drops depart the 13th floor and are determined by the Tower itself. Now if that doesn’t spook you, I don’t know what will!

Today’s Takeaway:
Walt Disney Imagineers know that shadows up the ante on the spook factor. A well-placed shadow, or one that appears to move or follow you is certainly an effective way to induce a startle or a shriek!

Check out this interactive shadow study from Engineering Interact (click here). Learn what causes shadows, what substances do not produce shadows, how shadows move and more!

I have yet to be brave enough to experience this attraction. Though maybe some day! I would at least like to just walk through and see what it looks like.

Tower of Terror is the perfect ride for nighttime! Although, I'm a bit of a scardey cat and don't ride it often:)

LOVE the TOT! And, like the Haunted Mansion, the atmosphere is so much better at night!

I'd love to just wander through the lobby, without having to ride the elevator itself :)

I've never even thought to ride it at night. We always rush there first thing so we don't have to wait in line. I bet it's a BLAST at night, though!
